P25 in Brief
What exactly is P25? Beginning in 1989, state, local and federal public safety groups and agencies collaborated to set a package of standards for interoperable digital two-way wireless communications products, with overall governance by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA).
According to the Project 25 Technology Interest Group, radio equipment that demonstrates compliance with P25 meets a set of minimum requirements to fit the needs of public safety. Administered by the TIA, P25 was created by, and is intended for, public safety professionals.
Because of the significant power levels leveraged by P25 systems (relative to LTE networks, for example), standards gain an added level of importance, particularly when it comes to surge protection. What’s more, the type of communication involved in public safety LMR applications means that any amount of downtime creates the potential for disastrous results.
