Transtector, PolyPhaser, and our customers deal with lightning and surge protection in our jobs every day, focusing on protecting network equipment. In the lightning season, however, a reminder about personal safety never hurts.
Public safety agencies across the United States are working to transform communications for first responders through the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNET) program, and surge protection from Transtector Systems and PolyPhaser is a significant part of the effort.
UL 1449 is the Underwriters Laboratories Safety Standard for Surge Protective Devices (SPD). Surges are rapid increases in voltage and current that can occur on AC or DC power circuits that can damage equipment attached to these circuits. An example of a surge would be a lightning strike on or near exposed power lines. The strike can induce voltages on the power line that can exceed a million volt.
Positive train control and other smart technologies are transforming how the rail industry operates. All of these systems require reliable power for seamless and continuous operation, as well as for the guaranteed safety of trains and travelers.
Cisco recently unveiled global mobile data statistics and projections for the next four years, and the numbers reveal what we all know—data usage continues to grow significantly, emphasizing the absolute necessity of reliable networks.
There’s no shortage of options when it comes to surge protection. It may be difficult to tell the difference among products and systems, and what type of surge protection device (SPD) is right for the application. Here are a few and notes to help sort what’s out there.
By now, the Smart Grid has become part of our vocabulary, and an ever-growing element in the utilities world. The Smart Grid is the result of the modernization of an electrical network system that’s more than a century old. Digital and analog systems take the place of outdated infrastructure, laying the groundwork for the deployment of emerging technologies and the need for network surge protection to assure reliability.
Global positioning systems are an important part of any RF network. GPS provides timing information that is critical in keeping RF networks synchronized. It is important that GPS receivers be protected from lightning strikes with RF lightning arrestors.
Today’s industrial applications include a broad range of sensitive, valuable and critical electronic equipment, from automation and control systems to instrumentation and LED lighting.
Protecting this equipment from surges, transients and other power anomalies is critical to maintaining performance and minimizing revenue loss from downtime. Transtector Systems and PolyPhaser provide a broad range of surge protection solutions for industrial applications. What strategies are best for this application?
One of the main issues confronting a small cell deployment is getting permits for the build and having them approved once the build is completed. Once a site has been identified, the permitting process begins. One of the main hurdles for approval of a permit is approval of the BOM that will be used at a small cell site. Electrical safety is a major concern of municipalities. Having a cabinet that is UL 67 Listed will address these safety concerns. This will facilitate in the approval of site permits as well as having them signed off during final site inspection.
